The Scene: Laura, Yang (one of The Five, the leaders of The Institution) and her good friend Ginger (yes, from Step One Two) are on a mission to Laura's hometown. I'm sure that what is happening might not be 100% understood due to it being at the end'ish part of the book. Either way, enjoy!
Yang leaned into the front seat and pointed. “Right here. Pull into that driveway.” Ginger did as she was told and parked.
Laura looked at the house and at the area they were in. It was sort of familiar, but she wasn’t sure. It had been a long time since she had been here. The house was just like all the others in Lastville. Wind beaten and old looking on the outside.
Someone pushed aside the curtain and peaked out at them. When they noticed they were seen, they quickly moved away from the window.
Yang tightened his tie and walked up to the door and let himself in. Ginger and Laura followed behind him. Laura had a chill creep up her spine. She just knew something was wrong.
She felt that someone with a spark was near, but couldn’t see them yet. The three of them walked into the living room and looked around. The person they were looking for must have seen them and was hiding. That was odd, behavior. Then again, they did just burst into their house unannounced.
She figured that she too would have ran and hid. In fact, she was about to when Magnis was knocked out and their bedroom was invaded.
The memories made her stomach feel uneasy on top of already having a bad feeling about things. Clearly there was no one in the living room of the house. Further into the room the carpet turned to tile and a table and chairs were neatly set up. Near that were double doors that probably lead to the kitchen. They reminded Laura of doors into a fancy restaurant’s kitchen, she had only seen such a thing on television and sadly never in person.
They walked over to the table and chairs; she felt the strange chill again and rubbed her arms like she was cold.
Yang was in front of the three, Laura next to him, and Ginger protecting their rear. Yang put his hand out and pushed the doors open. Instead of walking forward into the kitchen, he took a step back and almost knocked Laura over.
“What the hell?” Yang exclaimed
A voice came from the kitchen. “Sorry Yang, nothing personal.”
A voice came from the kitchen. “Sorry Yang, nothing personal.”
Something big hit the floor, and then a door opened and closed. There was a beeping noise that started slow and got faster. Yang turned all the way around and teleported a few yards away next to the front door.
When the kitchen door was swinging shut, the two girls were able to get a glance inside. There was medium sized metal box that was turned over on its side. It looked very convincing to be a bomb.
Before Yang could teleport again, and before Laura and Ginger were able to comprehend what was going on, there was a loud bang as the bomb exploded.
In the split second before the fire and shockwave hit her, Laura instinctively threw up her shield. She was flung backwards across the room. Even though she absorbed the blast she crashed through the big living room window and rolled out into the street. Her torso and legs had caught on fire but were put out when she tumbled into the road.
Yang was spun around and thrown into the front door with enough force to break it off the hinges. At the time just after when Yang and the door were being thrown into the driveway he teleported again near SUV. Even though he had teleported, he hadn’t shaken the force of the explosion and was slammed into the side door of the vehicle. He hit it hard enough to dent the sturdy door.
Her shield did a lot for Laura, but her whole body hurt. She felt heat on her body even though the fire had been put out. Using her shield had saved her life, but made her very weak. She clawed at the ground trying to get up, but her body wouldn’t obey.
Out of the corner of her eye she saw Yang unconscious against their SUV. From the ground she searched for any sign of Ginger. She didn’t see any movement anywhere that could be her.
Flames crackled from inside the house. Glass breaking and supports collapsing accompanied the sounds of fire.
Laura tried again to get up. She slowly managed to get to her feet and wobbled in place. She needed something to support herself but had nothing, so she fell over. Her head felt swimmy, she laid out on the street on her back. Some more loud noises came from the house and she turned her head so she could see what was happening. The roof fell inward and collapsed. As a result, fire sprayed out of the windows and glass and wood peppered the street around Laura. A dizzy feeling washed over her and she blacked out.
When she came to night had fallen and the only light in the area was the moon. She hadn’t been outside to see sunset in a very long time, but she knew darkness came early that time of year, so she wasn’t exactly sure how much time had passed. Her eyes weren’t fully open yet, she was still trying to recall the events up to the point in time she was in. A hand patted her on the cheek.
