Spark of the Dead (Part 4)

The remaining six of them ran out of the cabin into the open. Being in the frantic state they were all in, they didn’t know where they were running to, only that they were getting the hell out of that cabin.
Magnis stupidly turned around to see if the worms were after them. As soon as a false sense of security was in his head one of the worms shot through the air and started digging its way into his head through his ear.
He yelled and flopped down on the ground. He gripped onto its long body the spines cut and slashed his hands as he tried in vain to pull it out of his head.
Laura ran over to him and put her shield up hoping that if another was near it would stop it. As she reached Magnis’ body she felt one crash into the side of her head. The shield kept it out of her for now.
Magnis screeched in pain as the tail end of the worm crept the rest of the way into his head.
“Magnis! Magnis!” Laura screamed at him.
He went limp and was completely still.
Meanwhile Hillary had teleported inside the SUV. She locked it and was cowering in the passenger seat hoping not to be detected by any of the worms.
Ken and Ginger had taken off down the road. At hearing her friend scream for her husband she turned around and suffered the same fate as Magnis.
Ken heard Ginger scream as the worm latched onto her and crawled its way into her cranium. At the same time as he turned around to help Ginger he too put up his own brand of shield, electrically charging himself.
He felt a solid object hit the side of his head. The worm squealed on the ground after getting a great amount of volts through its wormy body.
He closed his eyes briefly and hoped that Ginger wouldn’t be too hurt by what he was about to do. Ken grabbed onto the tail end of the worm and sent a large jolt through it. It twisted and flailed its tail about grazing the side of Ginger’s face cutting her before it went limp.
“Ginger! Speak to me, are you ok?”
She groaned in recognition to his words.
“The Ken is really sorry for how bad that probably hurt.”
She coughed loudly and tried to sit up. “I… I can’t feel the left side of my body!” She yelled freaking out.
Fish had ran behind the cabin and leaped into the water with the hopes that the worms wouldn’t be able to swim after him. An big oh-shit feeling washed over him as soon as his body was in the water. He suddenly realized that they resembled leaches or even eels and both were things that had no trouble in the water.
“Magnis, no!” Laura yelled throwing her arms over him and crying loudly on his chest.
“Laura!” Ken yelled out to her from about a hundred feet away.
She heard him through her loud sobs but didn’t respond. Whatever the thing was that was in Yang is now inside Magnis, her Magnis, her everything. If he was going to suffer the same fate as Yang and turn into a raged crazy person who didn’t know who his friends were, she wouldn’t have it in her to fight him.
“Laura!” Ken came running up to Laura and leaned down to pull her up. Annoyingly the same worm that wasn’t able to get in Laura hit the side of his head and after impact flailed on the ground screeching the same way the other did.
“What?” She screamed in his face.
He looked down at Magnis. Coldly he stated, “Magnis is done for, we have to get out of here before he ends up attacking us like Yang did.”
Laura already knew what he just told her, but hearing it from someone else hurt her deep inside. She flopped down on the ground kneeling next to Magnis. That was her husband motionless on the ground. His eyes still showed the horror of it entering his skull and his chest was rising up and down. He was alive for now, but how long would he be alive until that thing took control of him like it did with Yang. He didn’t seem to actually be alive, that thing inside was animating him from the inside.
Ken reached down and put her back on her feet. She threw her head against him and cried loudly. He put his hand on her head to comfort her but had important things to say, they didn’t have time to cry if they wanted to live. He knew that Magnis alive was extremely deadly, if they gave that worm too much time they could be in a very bad situation.
“The Ken stopped one from going all the way inside Ginger’s head, but she can’t move half her body now. Who knows how long it will be will be until it gets all the way in, we have to get over to her now.”
Laura separated herself from Ken and looked down at Magnis. Another tear ran down her face and she nodded at Ken.
With a heavy heart she ran away from her beloved husband over to her friend who might still be able to be saved.
“Ginger can you hear me?” she asked getting right next to her. “Are you ok?”
Upset and clearly in a lot of distress she freaked out on her friend. “No I am not ok! I have this thorny worm hanging out of my head and I can’t move half my body! How do think I am?”
Laura was about to yell at her for yelling at her when Ken put his hand over her mouth. “Come on, we don’t have time to fight with each other.”
A lone figure breaks the surface of the lake with each stroke he takes through the water.
Despite Magnis’ joke at the campfire, Fish was an excellent swimmer; he doubted that his ancestry had anything to do with it either.
He paddled and kicked hard in the chilly water. He had no idea if anything was after him or if he was safely putting distance between him and the things.
Thoughts came to him of turning around to see if the others were ok or if the worm things had gotten them already. Part of him wanted to go back, but the logical part of him told him to keep swimming hard. If he was able to get away, maybe he could find help. He didn’t know what sort of help they could get for something as messed up as this, but there had to be something he could do.
Ken told Ginger that he was going to see if he could pull the worm out of her head. With tears rolling down her cheeks she begged him not to try.
Ken pleaded with her telling her that she would be ok. He took a deep breath out and lightly tugged on it. She screeched loudly in pain and arched her back by pushing down on the ground with the leg and arm she could move.
Ken stood up and faced away from Ginger to explain to Laura that they were going to have to move Ginger to the SUV. After they got the hell out of there they could come up with a plan for what how to help her; that there had to be a doctor or something somewhere around.
He leaned back down to Ginger and told her what they were going to do. With a few silent tears rolling down her face she nodded the best she could.
After that he picked her up and they briskly walked over to the vehicle.
When they got closer they saw that Hillary was inside. She sat up in the seat and unlocked the doors for them. Quickly they all got into the vehicle not wanting to give any of the worms a chance to get in. The one that was meant for Hillary might still be out there, there was no knowing what happened to Fish, and there was no way to know if the first worm went back into Yang or not.
Laura had gotten into the driver seat and Ken got into the back with Ginger laid out so her head was on his lap. He oddly buckled her so she would stay in place. Ken tried his best to give her words of comfort but they weren’t helping her due to the pain she was in along with the distressful situation she knew she was in.
They talked briefly if they should try to find Fish or even wait for him to show up. The outcome of the conversation was that they sadly didn’t have time to wait and the survivability of four outweighed one person.
“Ken, you still have the keys in your jeans?” Laura asked.
“Uh, The Ken should. Let me check.” He put his hand into his pocket and came up with nothing. “The Ken has to move your head to see if the keys are in this pocket, ok?” Ginger whimpered in response. Ken raised her head as he dug into his pocket. With a jingle he pulled the SUV’s keys out and tossed them to Laura. Carefully he put Ginger’s head back down on his lap and stroked her hair lovingly. The amount of pain she was in made her start sobbing again and she was noticeably trying to hold it in.
Laura turned the keys in the ignition and the vehicle roared to life. She searched for the right knob and turned the headlights on. It felt like her heart dropped into her stomach as the lights illuminated Magnis’ body. She felt strong emotions coming over her and knew she was about to cry.
Before she could shed a tear for him; his body slowly started to get up off the ground. After standing upright he facing the cabin and stood still.
Frozen in terror knowing what was going to happen next Laura stared out the windshield. She muttered quietly trying to express the combination of fear and sadness to no avail.
Hillary was leaning in the back seat helping Ken comforting Ginger when she heard Laura’s noises. She turned around to see Magnis standing upright. She had witnessed what happened to him and started freaking out at him getting back on his feet.
“Laura! Back up before he turns around!”
Her friend’s yelling snapped her back to reality and she shifted the car into reverse.
At the sound of the vehicle moving Magnis turned in the direction of them and right away charged at the vehicle. His leg enhancements had him upon them in seconds and he slammed his body into passenger side of the SUV. His body against the vehicle was enough to spin it the rest of the way around.
“Drive!” Hillary yelled the command at Laura.
Quickly she shifted into drive and the tires spit rocks out from behind them at Magnis temporarily dazing him.
The SUV bolted forward down the road. They just started gaining speed when Laura was forced to brake mildly to turn onto the paved road.
The tires squealed as they took the sharp turn. The vehicle wobbled as Laura zigzagged from side to side trying to gain control and drive strait. As soon as she was accelerating again Laura looked in the rear view mirror to see Magnis come around the corner of the driveway running at full speed.
Fish had finished the over a mile swim across the lake and was on dry land. Water poured down his body as he sat down and stared off into the distance from where he came. He wasn’t tired from the swim, the years of strength and fitness training served him well.
He put his hands to his face and ran them up over his head ringing out the water from his hair.
“What the frick do I do now?” he asked himself now alone in the dark.
Hillary looked in the side mirror and she too saw Magnis coming after them and screamed unnecessarily loud. Ken turned around and swore. “Give it some gas,” he shouted.
Laura floored it but Magnis was still gaining on them. They weren’t completely up to speed yet and even as the speedometer’s pin moved past fifty miles an hour Magnis was gaining on them.
She had to lighten her foot as they took a turn in the dark.
This was unfortunately a chance for Magnis to gain more ground on them and he swung at the vehicle. His fist crashed into the taillight separating it from the vehicle.
Hillary screamed some more and Laura glared fiercely at the road ahead of them.
Magnis grabbed onto the bumper attempting to get them to stop and face his worm endued rage. The SUV shook and the tires squealed from Magnis’ interference.
“Brake!” Ginger commanded loud enough to be painful for her.
Laura didn’t think, only acted. The SUV jerked forward violently as brick house Magnis crashed into the back of them.
Laura returned to thinking for herself and stomped on the gas again as soon as the vehicle came to a stop. She took a painful glance in the rear view mirror and saw the remaining taillight just getting out of range to show her husband on his back struggling to get up.
She wiped the moisture from her face as they left him and the cabin behind them.
