Spark of the Dead (Part 1)

In the spirit of Halloween I'm writing another short story involving many characters from Spark: Evolution together on a vacation to a lakeside cabin deep in the woods of northern Oregon. This is a great excuse for me to put several people together that would otherwise be at each others throats.
The actual story in this first part is going to be a bit shorter because I take time to give a few extra details before the story starts that are key to understanding things. I'll be putting up new parts each day until I finish the story. As always, I hope you enjoy!

Char Notes: (Some things to be clear on that I don't want to go into extensive detail mid story.)

Magnis and Laura are married here and in the series. Magnis and Fish (James, but most everyone calls him his random nickname.) are part of the group named Nowhere. On the other side of the war is The Institution. It's members include Laura, Ken, Yang, Hillary, and Ginger. These organizations don't mean anything in this short story, but it is a background to those who don't yet know that info.

Nowhere = S.O.U.L = Engineered strength and agility multipliers installed in the arm(s) and/or legs.
  • Magnis has them in both his arms and legs. He is very strong and buff. (The way he starts in Evolution is not this description, but something that he becomes over time.)
  • Fish has S.O.U.L only in his dominate arm (left). Almost equally as strong as Magnis but still really buff as well.
The Institution = Spark = Evolved part of the brain that gives the privileged individuals access to amazing powers.
  • Laura has strong telekinetic abilities she unleashes in a frontal cone. She can use her spark to encase her body in a protective shield. She also has the ability to manipulate small parts of matter, at the cost of a percent of her own spark, to appear as things such as animals.
  • Yang is an skilled fighter and his spark makes him very deadly by allowing him to have short range teleportation and cold-fire. The visual of cold-fire is a blue glow around a peson's hands as a burst of artificial adrenaline surges through their body. It grants them increased agility and reaction times without the after effects of real adrenaline.
  • Ken is strong and built like those from Nowhere. His spark allows him to channel electricity through his body electrically charging his unarmed attacks and those who touch him can also be electrocuted.
  • Hillary is able to teleport and use an ability called tethering. Using that ability she can move objects to or away from herself.
  • Ginger has a stronger spark than her twin sister and is also in control of the tethering ability as well as telekinetic abilities similar to Laura.

Spark of the Dead
 Part 1

“Oh God, they are surrounding us! Can’t you do something heroic?” Hillary yelled frantically at Laura.
In a panic driven tone she yelled back, “What do you expect me to do, they already got everyone else! What can I possibly do against them?”
Both girls closed their eyes and screamed loudly as the zombie horde closed in on them.

Six Hours Earlier...
Heavy breathing persists in the soft darkness of night. The stars and moon lit the area only enough to see.
A flash of blue cuts through the trees and disappears with a rustling of leaves and brush.
“Show yourself! You coward!” Magnis yelled while holding his left arm, blood running down it and dripping steadily onto the ground.
Something in the brush moved again and Magnis recklessly charged in its direction with accelerated speed. He spotted a shadowed figure and swung at it with his uninjured arm; it disappeared in a sand-like dissolve before it reappeared behind him. It flipped up into the air and kicked Magnis in the back of his shoulder blades. Magnis stumbled forward but didn’t fall down. He recovered quickly to spin around and reached out at the figure hoping to grab at its throat. Before his hand touched flesh it disappeared again in the same fashion as before.
Magnis expected them to be behind him and ducked down while sweeping his leg backwards making contact with the figure’s own legs. Gravity helped them to the ground and they landed on their back. Magnis turned around again and swung downward at the ground. He felt the fabric of their clothes on his hand just as they teleported away again. His hand struck the ground and produced a large cloud of dust.
He stood upright and turned around again. The figure stood still a few yards away and adjusted his tie then put his hands in suit pockets.
“Good, you’re learning to anticipate my movement, but don’t think I’ll let you win,” Yang said.
A half smile crossed Magnis’ face. “Who said I needed you to let me.”
Magnis charged at Yang with the speed enhancements in his legs propelling him forward at full speed.
Yang waited until Magnis was just about to hit him when he teleported up in the air above Magnis. He dropped down on top of his shoulders and kicked him in the side of the head. Magnis reached up quickly and grabbed his leg. Once he had Yang in his clutches he threw him down at the ground quickly knowing he would teleport again soon.
Just before hitting the ground Yang did indeed teleport out of his grip. He reappeared standing in front of Magnis and his extended his fingers as his hands ignited with a bright blue. He attacked Magnis with his fists enclosed in iron plated gloves. He struck Magnis with increased speed that he wasn’t able to block or counter.
Magnis was being walked backwards with each hit he took. Every hit from the metal gloves threatened to open up his skin again just like the lucky strike from before. They had each swung at each other at the same time and the corner of a plate caught the side of his arm tearing the skin.
Magnis had enough and slammed his own hands together in front of him as hard as he could. Yang was in mid punch and his hand was in just the right place to be crushed.
Him yelling out in pain from every bone being mashed inside the glove was enough of an opening for Magnis to strike back some more. He swung at Yang hitting him in the chest knocking him to the ground and making him roll across the dirt. Still focused on his hand, Yang hadn’t teleport away.
Magnis picked him up by the front of his suit and brought his arm back.
“Magnis! Stop, stop, stop!”
Magnis looked at him weird and raised an eyebrow. “What?”
“Put me down! You’re bleeding on my suit!” Yang yelled at him.
“Oh, sorry,” Magnis said letting him stand on his own two feet. “You just wanted to end the fight because the pain in your hand is too much for you.” He mumbled quietly to himself, “Who wears a suit all the time anyways.”
“Look,” Yang said holding up his hand.
His hand wasn’t just crushed from Magnis but the iron plates in his glove were bent inward around the bones in his fingers.
“Oh shit. Um, bite down and I’ll bend them back for you.”
Yang made noises of a man in pain as Magnis pried the plates apart. Yang took his glove off carefully and inspected the damage to his hand.
Several others were sitting on a log watching the two and their friendly match. Laura sat on the ground leaning against the log, her long brown hair, that matched her eyes, draped around her shoulders. Muscular Ken in his overly tight white shirt was leaning up against a nearby telephone pole observing the fighters with his arms crossed. Fish was doing what all good Irish men do and took a long swig of his liter bottle of lager. The identical twins Hillary and Ginger, typical blondes Hillary much more so than Ginger, sat on the log gabbing away not paying attention to the fight. Magnis himself was as built as Ken and only a little bit more than Fish but wore normal type attire of a plain t-shirt and jeans. Yang, being an Asian man, was the oldest in the group by at least ten years. He has a great love for fine suits, even when on vacation in the woods at a lakeside cabin.
“Who wants a gel treatment?” Laura called out to the two fighters.
“Hell, bring it on,” Yang said enthusiastically walking to the direction of the group holding his mangled hand.
Magnis looked at his arm that was still bleeding from Yang’s lucky hit. He walked over to everyone else to have his wound healed with the genetically engineered medical gel. Yang’s broken hand would be as good as new in half an hour and his gash would take only a few minutes to be fully healed.
“Anyone else up fer uh fight?” Fish asked louder than was necessary as he dropped his empty bottle on the ground.
Laura laughed at him; he was determined to prove his heritage by drinking four liter bottles of beer in less than an hour. He wasn’t one to drink much at all but was certain that he would be able to handle it.
“Come on Hillary, step up to the plate,” Ginger said poking her sister in the arm.
She rubbed her arm where she was poked and glared at Ginger. “No way. I’m not so good at this fighting stuff like the rest of you are,” she shot back defensively.
Fish belched loudly and rubbed his right eye sleepily.
Ginger looked at Hillary raising an eyebrow. “Look at the state he is in, come on sis, don’t be a wimp.”
“Don’t sthink I can’t hear yous,” Fish said pointing a wobbly finger at her.
Hillary sighed and stood up. She looked over at Laura who gave her an encouraging smile. Hillary sighed again and walked over to the middle of the clearing reluctantly waiting for Fish to engage her in combat.
“Now dats what I’m talk’n about,” he said with slurred speech. “Get ready!” He yelled getting in stance to charge at Hillary.
Hillary was more of a girly girl than the other two women in the group. She gulped to herself but readied her spark to fight.
Fish ran at Hillary stumbling as he went. As he got nearer to Hillary he raised his arm up to swing at her. Hillary put her hands up to her face and screamed.
He made contact with her but not with his fist but his whole body.
“Ahhh! Help me!” Delicate Hillary yelled from underneath their passed out friend.
Everyone burst into laughter at the situation as helpless Hillary was too distraught to remember she could teleport out from under Fish.
