Spark: Step One Two (Part 1)

This short story was written as another secondary character's point of view. This time it is to show the spark retrieval process. The situation is unique and the characters that are the main focus act differently based on the situation than they normally do through the rest of Spark: Evolution. I uh, had a drink or two while writing half of this. So as always, I hope you can get past the grammatical errors and enjoy the story. I think this will be the last short story I will start for a while, and get into the next parts of the short stories I've already written. Also, these are basically rough drafts, unpolished stories, those who will check my blog often may see one of them transform into a polished form. Regardless, enjoy!
Spark: Step One Two
Part 1

“Nina, come on. Drive on the right side of the road!” Ginger yelled at her colleague.
Nina threw her head back and laughed loudly as she recklessly drove The Institution’s SUV down the empty highway during the middle of the night.
Ginger never liked being teamed up with Nina. She always treated every aspect of what they did as agents as a joke. Ginger being a serious individual that treated each mission very professionally always clashed with Nina’s careless mindset.
While the girls fought over if it mattered if people were on the road or not Luther sat in the backseat silently listening to the two girls. He never said too much and when he did speak it was always simple and to the point. His straightforwardness was only matched by his physical presence. Luther is a large dark man to start with and if that wasn’t enough, he has extraordinary strength behind all his seemingly fat limbs. Most people that he came in contact with for the first time were instantly afraid of him. Those who got to know him a little better learned to properly fear him as one of The Five.
Ginger eventually gave up at telling Nina to drive in the lines and at reasonable speeds. She crossed her arms and angrily glared at the dashboard until they got to their location. They were on a recovery mission to get someone in Ginger’s home town.
She thought it was weird how they were going back when she had been at The Institution a while. It would be expected that they would have gotten everyone from the area around the same time she was brought there. She thought that maybe someone could have moved into the town, but she had no idea who would willingly move to such a small and boring town such as Hunter. The dang place didn’t even have a grocery store or any businesses. You had to go twenty miles at least to go shopping for anything.
Luther spoke up from the back seat. “Two blocks down the middle house on the left side.”
Nina drove to where she was instructed. Being in the town now, she knew that Luther himself would snap at her if she didn’t drive normal. They made a point of not drawing any extra attention to themselves if they could help it. Ginger of course always thought that this was interesting logic considering they drove newer vehicles. Most of the places they went didn’t have any vehicles and if they did she guessed that they wouldn’t be any younger than twenty years old at the best.
Ginger suddenly sat up in her seat and looked surprisingly out the window. They were at her parent’s house. “What the heck?”
In a mean tone Nina asked a question of her own, “Are we at an old boyfriend’s house? Scared of them to see how much you’ve let yourself go?”
Ginger ignored her comments, especially the last one due to her knowing she was better looking than Nina.
“This is my parent’s house,” Ginger said.
“Ooh, lucky duck.” She put her hand behind her inside her jacket to where she sheathed her long sword. “Tell you what, whatever one has the spark. I’ll let you stick the other one yourself,” an evil smile spread across her face and she laughed.
Ginger was used to her trying to get a rise out of her and continued to ignore what it was that she said. She shot back with, “Haven’t you been warned about using that thing? You’re going to find yourself being the one killed one of these days.”
In an irritated voice she said, “That’s easy for you to say. You actually have a spark power that is practical while I managed to get a worthless ability.”
“Quiet and get out,” Luther said as he opened up his door and left the SUV. Both girls stopped bickering and quickly did what they were told.
Ginger wondered why they were at her parent’s house. Did they still live there? After she was taken did they leave? The Five were the oldest members of The Institution that she knew of, the whole time they went searching for more people with a spark she hadn’t come across anyone that was as old as her parents would be.
As she went over in her head what could be the reason of why they were there, Luther walked up to the house and casually thrust his palm outward hard enough to break the door open. It wouldn’t have mattered to him if the door opened that way or not, it sure as hell did now. He walked inside and the other two followed closely behind him.
The house was the same as she remembered it. The green couch was facing the east wall so it was pointed at the television that was inside an entertainment center that would only fit there. There was a silver cage in the corner that would hold a pet bird she had when she was much younger but in the later years her mother decided to keep it where it was as a memory of her daughter. Looking around at the rest of the room it seemed everything was pretty much in the same place that it would have been if they were still living there.
It being only a few seconds since they entered the house, a voice started yelling from what Ginger knew as the kitchen.
“Dang it Randy, you better not have come over drunk again.” It sounded exactly like Ginger’s own voice.
That isn’t my mother’s voice… it’s… my sister, Ginger thought.
A woman walked into the room. She looked the exact same as Ginger does, average height with long blonde hair. The only difference is that her hair is draped over her shoulders while Ginger’s hair was put up and held in place with a hair accessory. She froze in place as soon as she saw the Luther, Nina, and Ginger.
“Ginger?” she asked unexpectedly.
“Hillary, what the hell are you doing here?”
“I think a better question is what are you doing here? You have people who are looking for you, yah know.”
Ginger put her hand on her forehead and closed her eyes briefly. “It wasn’t what it looked like Hillary. Something happened.”
“Yah something happened all right. You twisted your boyfriend’s head around and laid him down for a nap headfirst in the toilet.”
Nina looked at Ginger and started laughing uncontrollably. Luther stood there staring coldly at the twins in front of him, emotionless to what was going on.
“Shut up!” Ginger yelled at Nina. She of course didn’t listen but instead turned around and supported herself on the wall with one hand while basking in the humor of the situation.
Hillary leaned to the side and looked behind the trio. “Why the hell did you break my door. Are you too cool for knocking now? You some sort of bad ass criminal type now?”
Ginger swung her hand outward, “Damn it Hillary shut up and let me explain!”
Nina stopped laughing but was still held an amused tone in her voice. “I think I like your sister better than you.”
“Nina shut the hell up before I make you be quiet.”
“Pff,” she rolled her eyes, “I’d like to see you try,” at that she pulled her trench coat open to show the handle of her blade.
Ginger ignored her and her pointless threats to concentrate on explaining things to her sister. Hillary crossed her arms willing to listen but still wasn’t happy with how they entered her home.
Before Ginger started telling her what was going on with her she noticed that Hillary herself was the one at this location that had a spark inside of her. She wondered why she was here and where her parents were but first she had to calm her down before she could ask her own questions.
“On a night just like tonight a group of people came to my house and told me that I was special and different. That I have within me a dormant energy source that will allow me to have access to things that are thought of as super human.”
Hillary put her hands to the side of her head and let out a short laugh. “I’m not sure if I believe you but go on.”
Ginger glared at her. “Will you drop your guard and actually listen to what I’m saying. You know me better than anyone else in the world because you practically are me. You know I am not going to lie to you.”
Hillary uncrossed her arms. “Alright sis, I’m sorry.”
“As I was saying, I have within me what is called a spark. Now that I have unlocked my own spark, I can feel that you have one too. You have inside of your brain something special just like I do. We are collecting many others with a spark so we can change the world for the better.”
Hillary said nothing but appeared to be thinking.
Ginger’s stomach was churning and making her feel nauseous. She had been in only a few missions to gather new people so far, but they had all been people that weren’t her identical sister. Trying to explain the same thing to someone she had no ties to whatsoever made it lots easier to be forceful.
Ginger walked up to Hillary and grabbed onto the side of both her arms. “I’m telling you the truth Hillary. The night a group of people just like me and the other two here came to get me, Bill had beaten me up again. I was on the bed crying after he had his way with me when three people came into house in the same way we burst in. Bill threw a fit at them being in our house and tried to fight one of them and...” Ginger looked noticeably disturbed. “I don’t want to talk about this Hillary. Bill got what he had coming to him and these people I’m with saved me. They made me a new person, someone who isn’t afraid anymore. They gave me the ability to have power to stand up for myself, to be proud of who I am.”
Ginger lowered her arms to her side and sat down on the green couch with her head down. Hillary looked over at Luther and Nina. “Hey, do you two mind? This is getting into private stuff here.”
Luther took a step forward and made a low grunt. Ginger knew that he was getting impatient. It was either that Hillary was going to come with them now and willingly or they would have to kill her for knowing too much. She had to get Hillary to agree to come with them and before Luther decided to let his temper surface. There was no way she could kill her own sister or allow them to.
Ginger looked up at Hillary. “Sis, what I’m going to say might be hard to take in but know that it is for the best.”
Hillary sat down and looked into her eyes concerned about what she was going to say next.
“You have to come with me to this place. You are special in the same way the rest of us are, I can feel it within you.”
Hillary sighed and leaned back hard against the back of the couch. “Ginger. I don’t know what to tell you. First you disappear, dad died of a stroke, and soon after mom of a broken heart most likely, then you come out of nowhere and tell me you have been with some group of,” she put her fingers up to make quotation marks, “special people.” She looked at Ginger and squinted at her. “What would you say in a situation like this?”
Mom and dad are dead? I want to know more but I don’t want Luther to get upset, or for Nina to keep running her stupid mouth.
Nina spoke up in a way that was exactly what Ginger didn’t want to hear. “Oh come on you two. The family reunion can happen later.” She walked over to the couch and stared down at Hillary. “Let me put it into simple words. Come with us or my blade tastes your blood.” She leaned down and opened her eyes wide to further accent her point, “You got it?”
Hillary scowled at Nina and turned to Ginger. “Are those really my options? Just because of this… um, what was it called?”
“A spark,” Ginger answered. She was starting to get annoyed, but it was more due to Nina than Hillary.
“Because I have a spark in my head I disappear with you all or die?”
“That is the only way sis. You say mom and dad are gone. You have no obligations to this place anymore, come with me. Trust your sister.”
“Hey, just because I’m not married or have kids doesn’t mean I’m not fine with being here in Hunter.”
Nina smiled big and put her hand on the handle of her sword.
Ginger stood up and put her palm out threateningly. “Don’t you dare!”
“Oh come on, a little fear only helps get the cogs turning,” she laughed but kept her hand where it was.
“Fine.” Hillary stood up as well. “I don’t know what I’m getting myself into, but I trust you Ginger. That and…”
“And?” Ginger asked.
“Well, who likes to die? That sounds like it sucks.”
Ginger jumped forward and hugged her sister tightly.
Everyone was quiet until Nina broke the silence.
“Can I at least break something before we go?” she asked as she pulled her sword out into the open.
